As we age, our bone density decreases, making our bones weaker and increasing our risk of bone fractures. It is estimated that 1 out of 2 women, and 1 out of 4 men will have a bone fracture, related to bone loss (osteopenia/osteoporosis), in their lifetime. Research has shown that yoga can be an effective way to combat this bone loss as we age, thus reducing the risk of bone fractures.
If you have been diagnosed with age-related osteopenia or osteoporosis and want to learn how yoga can help to improve your overall muscle and bone strength, while reducing their risk for falls, this series is for you.

What you will learn:
- Definitions of osteopenia and osteoporosis, a little bit about the structure of our bones and how bone loss occurs.
- 12 yoga poses that have been shown to significantly improve bone density scores if practiced regularly
- How to safely and effectively do each pose – Instruction using various props will be provided to allow you to explore and discover the safest expression of each pose for YOUR body.
- How a regular yoga practice can reduce the risk of bone fractures by improving balance, muscular strength, range of motion, coordination and confidence, thereby reducing the risk of falling
- The first three weeks will be devoted to learning the poses.
- The last three weeks will be spent putting the poses together into a flow, so you can take what you have learned with you, incorporating it into a home yoga practice.
- Handouts with images and instructions for each pose will be provided.
