Ecstatic dance is a form of self-expression in which dancers abandon themselves to the rhythm of the music and move their bodies intuitively. This free form movement practice requires 100% presence resulting in a meditative, trancelike state out of which great joy, freedom and peace can arise. Ecstatic dance is not a “class” with a teacher providing instruction. Rather, a facilitator will set the tone of the dance, create a comfortable atmosphere, hold space for the group and, most importantly, support dancers on their spiritual journey.
FAQs
What is the community like?
We are an inclusive non-denominational group that gathers for the joy of moving and dancing together. Priding ourselves on diversity, we welcome people of all genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, religions and ages with open arms.
Do I need dance experience?
No! The actual movements do not matter, it is how you feel that matters. Ecstatic dance is for anyone who can move their body in basic ways—sit, stand, walk, lay on the floor, stretch, etc. The goal is for dancers to be 100% present with the intention of connecting with their internal sensations to develop more trust and confidence with the Self.
What do I wear/bring?
We want you to be comfortable, so wear whatever you want, just be prepared to sweat. Depending on your style of dance you may want to bring knee pads, arm/leg warmers. Flow toys and other dance props are permitted provided they’re used safely and do not infringe on others' dance space. The studio has yoga mats, bolsters, blocks and wheels for all your pre and post dance self care. Most importantly – bring water, a curious mind, a creative spirit and an open heart.
What is the format of the event?
The first 15 minutes will be focused on dancers getting settled into the space and warming up their bodies with gentle stretches and serene music. There will be an opening circle where the guidelines will be reviewed and intentions set. (Please note, no admittance will be allowed after the opening circle). The main dance set will be approximately 60 minutes followed by a grounding meditation and a closing circle. You are not required to participate in any part that doesn’t resonate with you. It is acceptable to sit and observe or close your eyes and meditate at any point in the journey.
What isn’t allowed on the dance floor?
The dance floor is a safe space to allow your authentic Self to shine, so it is very important that everyone follow the rules. Shoes are not allowed for hygiene reasons and socks are discouraged unless they have grippy bottoms. Ecstatic dancing is a somatic experience, so talking isn’t allowed between the opening and closing circle. Water is not permitted on the dance floor for the safety of dancers, so just like athletes, we keep it on the sidelines. Photography and videos are not permitted on the dance floor because this takes away other people's privacy. Most importantly ecstatic dance must be done without alcohol, cannabis or other drugs.
Can I interact with another person on the dance floor?
Many come to dance by themselves, so personal space, expression and vibe must be respected. If you see someone dancing with sexual expression, that isn’t an invitation to grind up on them. If you would like to interact with someone (mirror their dance moves from far away, dance in close proximity or have physical contact) ASK FOR CONSENT! Stay aware of your physical space, so that you don’t accidentally hit someone in the face.
