Ayurveda which translates as “Life Knowledge” along with Yoga have their roots in the Vedic traditions of India. Both disciplines also share as their foundation in Sankhya philosophy which outlines the evolution of consciousness into matter. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras can be viewed an involution of Sankhya leading us from identification with our physical state to self-realization, that we are part of consciousness. Ayurveda, whose primary focus is health maintenance and longevity is based on the concept that what exists in the universe, the macrocosm also exists within us, the microcosm. The Bhutas or elements of space, air, fire, water and earth that make up nature are also within our bodies in unique combinations. Ayurveda categorizes these combinations into what’s known as the Dosha Prakrutis. Our Doshas can become out of balance through; diet, lifestyle, stages of life, time of day and changes in season. Ayurveda seeks to maintain and restore our natural balance and uses Yoga, meditation and pranayama as a tools to balance our Doshas. In our workshop we will explore; the history of Ayurveda, the Doshas, the impact of lifestyle and diet on our Doshas and the relationship of Ayurveda and Yoga.
