Join Devon Blakely in this supportive training for yoga teachers, professional counselors, social workers, and any individual who seeks to gain insight and empowerment in managing anxiety, stress and mental health issues on and off the mat.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America more than one in every four US adults experienced an anxiety disorder at some point—approximately one in five in just this past year alone!! Between the difficult and sometimes dangerous potential side effects of many pharmacological treatments and the lack of adequate health insurance in this country, more and more individuals are seeking relief in the yoga studio. Yet, a significant number of anxious people who we know would likely benefit greatly from the practice have reported that yoga and meditation is “just not for them,” They complain that, “it moves too slowly,” or that “it makes them more anxious.” Why is this? Is it their preconceived ideas? Is it their actual experience? Is it possible that forcing an anxious person to be still and relax is not the best way to help ease their anxiety? Learning where yoga shines and where it struggles in addressing anxiety can help us to become the kind of teacher who provides a safe haven for so many on this difficult journey. We can learn to empower our students to become active participants rather than passive patients on their path to wellness.
In this module we will explore the physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety in greater depth and discover how and why a mindful instruction of yoga is uniquely well suited to provide a viable alternative as well as an adjunct treatment to medication and talk therapy. Our first goal will be to raise our awareness of the degree of anxiety in our own life and discover the necessary tools for mitigating its effects so that we may teach from a place of authentic knowledge and experience. We will also discuss when and how to address anxiety in the yoga studio within our classes, with individual students and when it is best to refer someone elsewhere. In addition to deepening our own personal practice, in this module:
I am so excited to share this information with all who are interested in deepening their knowledge of the healing capacities of yoga. I have dealt with both physical and mental health challenges for my entire adult life and found so much empowerment, healing and solace in my yoga practice. I have been exploring holistic approaches to healing for decades and am super excited by all of the latest scientific research that supports the yogic perspective that healing involves the whole body, mind and spirit. I feel very strongly that the western allopathic approach to health which primarily addresses illness at the level of symptoms and usually believes the answer is surgical or pharmacological is so incredibly limited. There are so many discoveries in neuroscience and functional and integrative medicine that demonstrate the amazing healing potential of mindfulness based approaches. And I feel a deep kinship with and gratitude for those who seek to take personal responsibility in participating in their own healing.
